Highpost Golf Club - 15th November 2021 - the Pairs Trophy
Guys
The Society gathered at High Post for its penultimate meeting of 2021 in
the shape of a meetings favourite: the annual Pairs Challenge. 12 teams (including 5 guests) entered for 18 holes of aggregate stableford points plus individual challenges played mostly in pleasant
autumn sunshine. Despite seasonal maintenance being carried out on the fairways, the course was well presented with excellent, smartly manicured greens. Afterwards the meeting enjoyed pie and
mash, and prize-giving, in the comfortable surroundings of High Post's recently-revamped clubhouse. A day much enjoyed by all, I think.
The Results for the Pairs
Challenge:
The INDIVIDUALS:
Nearest the pin #5 - Martin Hollis
#8 - Robbie Robison
#11 - Alan Green
#17 - Peter Henderson
...... and in 2, #4 - Peter
Henderson

Challenge Winners - Nic Artiss & Tony

Tight at the top! Congratulations to Nic and Tony.
No 'hot chips' were recorded and there will of course, be no handicap
adjustments. My thanks as always to Tony, Sean and Nick for their hard work in making the day a success.
Housekeeping
The final meeting of the year will be on Tues 07 Dec at Tidworth Garrison
GC where the Captain's Trophy will be contested by members. I decided to attach a trophy because our season was shortened by Covid. Traditionally at the December gathering we hold the Society's AGM
where only members have input but I want to stress that as this is a trophy challenge, guests will be most welcome for the breakfast, throughout the AGM and for the golf after. Tony will be in touch
with the fine detail very shortly (time is short); please confirm attendance promptly to ensure that the Club can give us their very best service.
Another e-mail from me will follow in a couple of days supplying details of
the vouchers available in the auction.
I look forward to seeing you at Tidworth.
Best regards
Robin
Captain for a little longer!
Salisbury and South Wilts, Thursday 14th
October 2021 - The Autumn Cup
Guys
At a time of year when waterproofs and woollies are added to the bags, what a
pleasant surprise to play a round in shirtsleeves! 15 AGS members and 3 guests enjoyed a superbly prepared course in warm sunshine for the entire afternoon. S Wilts is a pretty place with its
wonderful views of Salisbury city and, being well away from busy traffic, a tranquil golfing experience. That is until the peace was shattered by those observing Tony
Ford's outrageous hole in one at the 8th, unsurprisingly taking the nearest-the-pin prize. One of those rare golfing moments we all strive for - congratulations Tony, and thanks for the
drink!
After golf the meeting was joined by Bridget Quilliam, and all enjoyed the
excellent catering and service provided by the S Wilts staff. In reporting the results for prize-giving, Sean Canham commented how the new handicapping system has compressed the scoring. So, it must
work.
The Results, for the Autumn
Cup:
Best Guest - Damon Brown 41 pts (wow)
Wooden spoon - Peter Quilliam few pts
Nearest the pin - Tony Ford
and in 2 - Robbie
Robinson
and in 3 - Calvin
Crisp
Captain's Prize, best aggregate par 3s - Jerry Lee 11
pts
Third place - Calvin Crisp 35 pts (on
countback)
Runner-up - Nic Artiss 36 pts
Cup Winner - Robin Coupland
37 pts
A rare success for yours truly.
Chips-in were recorded by Jerry Lee, Peter Quilliam and of course Tony
Ford.
Our Next Meeting is the Pairs
Challenge at High Post on Monday 15 November. An earlier start with bacon roll and coffee/tea, mid-morning tees, and a meal mid-afternoon. This an excellent opportunity to bring a
guest. Full details from Tony Ford shortly.
Finally, we so far have around £170 in the charity pot (Guide Dogs for the
Blind) at present but in addition we have secured golfing vouchers from among the courses visited this year. In a separate e-mail I will be providing a list of these vouchers which I intend should be
auctioned at the AGM meeting at Tidworth in December. However, time at the AGM will be short so I will be inviting advance bids for the vouchers with open bids at the meeting acting as a back-stop.
More later.
I look forward to welcoming a good turn-out at High Post!
Best regards
Robin
Captain 2021
Marlborough Tuesday 21st September 2021 - The
Michaelmas Trophy
Guys
On Tuesday 21 September 15 members assembled to do battle for the Michaelmas
Trophy in fantastic late-summer sunshine, on surely one of the best courses in this area. Full of interest and beautifully manicured, what could go wrong with the added shots available under the new
handicapping system? Well, lots apparently and with that advantage was soon whittled away, there were no outstanding scores. Interestingly, the handicapping really did its job with 11 pts covering
the highest and lowest scores.
The Society welcomed guests Richard Fryer, Malcolm Waldron, David Willis and
Jack Branigan, and we hope they all enjoyed their day with us.
The hospitality and catering were faultless and unsurprisingly, there was
muttering about visiting next year. Maybe, and see the closing para of this report.
So, the results:
Best Guest - Jack Branigan 32 pts
Wooden Spoon - Carl Ross few pts
Nearest the pin - Guy Archer
and in 2 - Guy
Archer
and in 3 - Alan
Rogers
Captain's Prize, best aggregate par 3s - Jack
Branigan
Third place - Robin Coupland 34 pts (countback last
6)
Runner-up - Martin Hollis 35 pts (countback last
6)
Trophy Winner - Sean Canham 35 pts
(countback last 6)
Tight, wasn't it! Congratulations to Sean who was also the only member to
register a chip-in.
Our Next Meeting is on Thursday 14
October at Salisbury and South Wilts, for the Autumn Cup currently held by Tony Ford. This is a great course and always popular. As usual guests are
welcome.
Finally, I would like to remind the Society that our AGM looms, at Tidworth in
December, when officers are elected and plans for the next year are laid. My fourth term as Captain is coming to an end and I will not be standing for office in 2022, so now is the time to consider
how the Society will progress into the new year. One great 'perk' is that the Captain generally has the decisions of where we play!
With best regards, and I look forward to welcoming you at South
Wilts.

Wellow Golf Club - 18th August - The
Claret Jug and 27 hole day out
Guys,
It was my great pleasure to welcome members and guests to our annual 27-hole
day at Wellow last Wednesday in a much more relaxed atmosphere than that which has dominated our lives over the past couple of years.
We were all delighted have Peter (our President) and Bridget Quilliam back from
their much-extended vacation in Australia and we look forward to their company at future meetings. I reported that a number of our members were absent for various reasons including bereavement and
illness and I know I speak for all of us in wishing them speedy resolutions in those difficulties.
Nevertheless, a good turn-out saw 14 (including 3 guests) face the morning
9-hole stableford challenge on the Embley course, a further 4 members joining in the afternoon on the Ryedown and Blackwater courses for the 18-hole event challenging the Claret Jug, won last year by
Tony Ford.
We were lucky with the weather - fine and warm all day, and the presentation of
all three 9s was superb, but punishing for wayward golf! Add to that the excellent catering for breakfast, lunch and dinner presided over by friendly and enthusiastic staff, and I think all who
attended would agree that the day was most enjoyable and excellent value for money.
So, the RESULTS of the competitions and added
challenges:
9 Holes on Embley.
Nearest the pin par 3 -
Shaun Rogers.
Yours truly bagged the Wooden Spoon following a miserable points
haul.
Runner-up - Nick Cobb 20 pts
Winner - Sean Canham 21
pts.
Well done, Sean!
Ryedown and Blackwater - THE CLARET JUG.
Nearest the pin par 3 (x2) - Guy Lowton and Tony Ford
- do - in
2, par 4 - Sean Canham
- do - in
3, par 5 - Tony Ford
Captain's Prize, best aggregate par 3s - Nic Artiss 14
pts
Best Guest - Guy Lowton 42 pts
Wooden Spoon - Martin Hollis few pts
3rd place - Nick Cobb 38 pts
2nd place - Jerry Lee 40 pts
Winner - Carl Ross
42 pts
Congratulations to Carl; his third success in this competition.
Special thanks to Tony and Sean for their planning and organisation of the
day's events, and to Martin Hollis for providing the Wooden Spoon awards.
Fines for missing the green at the par 3 challenges provided a major boost to
the charity pot currently standing at £113. We also have 4-ball vouchers from Test Valley, Hamptworth, Wellow and Tidworth which I intend should be auctioned at our year end and will add considerably
more to the Pot - for the benefit of Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Housekeeping.
Expect some handicap adjustments following our visit to Wellow!
Next AGS meeting is at Marlborough on Tuesday 21
September for the Michaelmas Trophy, current holder Jerry Lee. Tony will be in touch shortly regarding arrangements for the day. As usual guests are encouraged and I look forward to welcoming you all
there.
Best regards
Robin
HAMPTWORTH GOLF CLUB - WEDNESDAY 14th
JULY - THE MID SUMMER SALVER
Guys
Hamptworth Golf Club were certainly not idle throughout the lockdown period so
AGS members and guests were able to enjoy a superbly presented course for our visit to challenge the Mid-Summer Salver, last contested in 2019. 14 members and 5 guests played in excellent weather and
for most when comparing the Stableford points scores to our visit to Test Valley last month, it proved a very tough challenge. The round included 'The Beast' - the 16th, a monster 666 yd par 6. The
total of 9 points between the field amassed at this hole tells its own story! Great fun though.
Clearly the course impressed. Some members have expressed the wish for
Hamptworth to be included in next year's programme.
The only downside to the day was the lack of post-round catering - something
the Club has yet to address in the lockdown-exit confusion. I do recall that in the past catering there has been very good so perhaps AGS will be there next season.
The RESULTS:
Nearest the pin at 10 - a total blank!! With a £1 fine for missing the
green and some very generous pocket-emptying, the Charity Pot benefitted to the tune of £28. Great result! (Guide Dogs for the Blind, by the way).
Nearest the pin in 2 at 12 - Richard Brown.
Captains Prize, best aggregate par 3s - Tony Budd, 10 pts.
Best Guest - Tony Budd, 40 pts.
Wooden Spoon (kindly donated by Martin Hollis) - Bruce Eyre, few
pts.
3rd prize - Tony Ford, 29 pts. (on countback)
2nd prize - Mark Hyson, 33 pts.
Winner of the Mid-Summer
Salver - Carl Ross, 34 pts.
Our congratulations to Carl. There will be no handicap adjustments for the next
meeting as none of the prize-winning members carded to their handicap.
A big 'thank you' to those who attended this meeting. It was a good turnout and
made for a most enjoyable day.
Our NEXT MEETING:
Wed 18 August at WELLOW, for the Claret Jug. This is our popular 27 hole
meeting: coffee, 9 hole competition, light lunch, then the 18 hole Stableford challenge, followed by a meal and prize giving. Confidence is high that catering will be 'normal'!
Guests are most welcome; let's have another great turnout, and I look forward
to welcoming you.
Best regards
Robin
TEST VALLEY GOLF CLUB - JUNE 16th - THE DAVID RANDALL
MEMORIAL TROPHY
Guys,
Firstly, my apologies to all for failing to send a report of our meeting held at Dummer on 20 May,
although as it turned out positives were hard to find. Peter Portsmouth kept his cool while all others foundered in the wind and rain, and deservedly received the Alan Potter Memorial Cup and our
congratulations. For all, a thorough soaking in the most appalling conditions not helped by the Club's failure to produce our ordered food.
Please note that those who paid the full amount of £45 are due a £5 refund.
In stark contrast our visit on 16 June to Test Valley to challenge the David Randall Memorial
Trophy was played out on a well manicured course in warm sunshine, and where members and guests enjoyed the Club's excellent organisation and delicious food. The Society welcomed Robert,
Michael and William Randall for the 11th year of this Trophy's presentation. There were 4 other guests, and Shaun Rogers was welcomed as a new member.
The results:
A keenly contested Wooden Spoon (generously donated by Martin Hollis) was awarded to yours
truly.
Calvin Crisp received a similar award for propping up the guests (very generous liquor also from
MH).
Nearest the pin at the par 3 #5 - Michael Randall
- do -- in 2 at the par 4 #15 - Carl
Ross
Captain's Prize, best aggregate par 3 points - Nic Artiss - 12 pts.
Best guest - Bob Randall - 40 pts.
3rd - Carl Ross - 38 pts
2nd - Nic Artiss - 39 pts
Trophy Winner - Tony Ford - 41 pts. Congratulations, Tony!
Note: HANDICAP REVUES ARE INEVITABLE.
Nick Hopson-Hill and Bruce Eyre recorded 'hot chips', and fines for missing the green at hole #5
yielded £16 towards Guide Dogs for the Blind charity.
A great day out, much enjoyed. Many thanks for the support of all who attended.
HOUSEKEEPING
Our next meeting is at Hamptworth on Wed 14 July, for The Mid Summer Salver (2019 winner John
Davis). Full details from Tony Ford will be sent shortly. Play is the usual format; guests are welcome.
Look forward to seeing you all.
With best regards
Robin
