AGS at Tidworth Tuesday 8th December 2020
The Captain’s Cup
With the full AGM being postponed this year due to the new lockdown restrictions AGS still managed to hit the golf course for the last round of the year and the first of the 2021 season.
Tidworth Garrison Golf Club welcomed us as well as could be expected on a chilly but bright day. It felt a bit strange not having a coffee and roll to start but a good natter was had on the first tee while waiting for the off.The club had also put up a new matrix with the revised handicap structure and I think that most players had a 1 point if not 2 increase in handicap due to the tough slope index at Tidworth.
Usually we play a Texas Scramble on AGM day but with the total change of format Captain Robin put forward a Stableford Competition playing for the Captains Cup. We had been offered slots for 20 players but we didn’t quite fill these unfortunately and 13 members and 2 guests battled for the top spot. Brian Mellor had already booked in a group a few minutes after our last so he also kept a score so he could ‘virtually’ join us too.
The weather was lovely considering the time of year and although a bit cold to start with warmed up nicely as the day developed and considering how wet things have been the course played very nicely indeed.
At the halfway house a very friendly and chatty lady provided a much needed bacon bap and a very nice hot cup of coffee – a great idea to put this on half way around the course I thought.
A great day was again had by all I reckon.
So – to the results
Robin set a fine for anyone not scoring a point on the short 7th down the hill – but everyone managed at least one here.
Special prize was for the best Stableford points on the 4 par 3’s. A close run thing here between Brian Mellor and Robin Coupland both on 9 points but Robin just nicked it with 5 on the back nine v 4 for Brian.
I have set a new page on the website with everyone’s score listed if you would like to see how you did against everyone else. http://www.andovergolfingsociety.co.uk/results-table-2021-season/
N.B Please note we are going to run on the chip in competition to the new season so this years are on this too.
In Third Place – Captain Robin Coupland - 30 points
In Second Place – Sean Canham – 36 points
In First Place – Mark Hyson - 38 points – VERY WELL DONE MARK
Housekeeping - thought it may be worthwhile updating you on the handicap adjustment system.
AT PRESENT
We have three leagues ; Handicaps 0 - 11, 12 - 18 and 19 up
If you score 36 points or more then there will be an adjustment to your handicap for the next round - if you win the wooden spoon you get +1 added for next time :-)
For the handicaps of 0 - 11 only the 1st place is docked by one point
For the handicaps of 12 - 18, 1st place is docked 2 points and 2nd 1 point
For 19+, the 1st is docked 3, 2nd 2 and 3rd 1.
Following the change to the calculations of handicap due to slope index the committee will investigate how, what we do, about any adjustments in the coming year. More to follow.
Thanks for a great year in very difficult circumstances. Look out for Robins email shortly with AGM related information, committee news and AGS updates.
Have a great Christmas and New Year – keep well and see you in March.
Weybrook Park Golf Club - Thursday 22nd October 2020
The Autumn Cup
Weybrook Park welcomed us with a very safe and well organised greeting for the afternoon AGS meeting for the Autumn Cup. One lady helped us the whole day and did a stirling job I think and after a welcoming cup of coffee and bacon roll at dedicated tables we got ready to hit the course in 4 groups with 11 members and 3 guests.
The weather was lovely considering the time of year and although windy on the front nine the course played very niceley. They had been working on some of the greens so perhaps not quite as true as they may have been and some showed some wear but overall a great course to spend the day on, my persoanl favourite hole the Par 5 with the lake to the right at around 200 yards and then up the hill to the pin over a face with bunkers.
No dinner of course now with the COVID regulations but the club offered us a side room and we were able to sit down in safety in our groups and have a good old chat. Robin said a few words and without too much ado the results were presented.
**Jerry has contacted me since to advise that his score has been added up incorrectly (thank you Jerry) so this does mean a change to the winners for the day**
A great day was again had by all I reckon.

Test Valley Golf Club - Wednesday 9th September 2020
The Michaelmas Trophy
Test Valley Golf Club welcomed us with a very safe and well organised greeting for the afternoon AGS meeting for the Michaelmas Trophy. After a welcoming cup of coffee and bacon roll from a very helpful chef and served in the conservatory we got ready to hit the course in 6 groups with 15 members and 5 guests.
The weather was lovely and the course very nicely presented, the greens in great condition, pretty fast but pretty true.
Dinner was a one course Cottage Pie with veggies and the club made us feel safe and comfortable with well spaced eating arrangements. Robin entertained us with a dodgy joke and spoke about the difficulty in locating another course that can offer us a safe meeting. Rushmore has not filled us with faith so at the moment we are still looking for an October venue (subject of course to the COVID developments). A quick committee meeting afterwards decided to see what happens between now and the end of the month and then decide on October - it is a little later in the month (22nd) so we have a bit of time.
A great day was again had by all I reckon.
Results for the afternoon round
Chip Ins - Tony Ford and Nick Cobb
Guest Prize - a tie at the top sorted on countback (16 v 13) to James Neal over Peter Portsmouth who has now joined the society as a Member - Welcome Peter.
Great news that Maria Clements and her husband Peter have also agreed to join us. Welcome.
Nearest the pin on the 13th - Guy Lowton
Wooden Spoon - Bruce Eyre ( +1 adjustment to handicap for next time Bruce - 29)

Nic Artiss - The Alan Potter Trophy
Tony Ford - The Claret Jug
Carl Ross - The David Randall Trophy.
Jerry was presented with the trophy of the day which Robin has kept for engraving and Jerry was able to take away his keepsake.
Robin said a quick few words, collected fines (£20) for all of us who didnt score a par on the 8th and thanked the bar staff for looking after us so well and green keepers for a great day. Alex Moody did par that hole but still put the £1 in the charity :-)

Dummer Golf Club - Tuesday 18th August 2020
The David Randall Spring Trophy
After a welcoming cup of coffee and bacon roll from a very helpful, very polite and well organised two ladies in the bar we all got ready for the 'slightly late' David Randall Spring Trophy and were delighted to be joined by members of David's family, Bob, William, Edward and Michael. Great to see you all again guys, thank you for coming to join us.
Suffice to say the weather was somewhat iffy but we did manage to get going on a very nice conditioned course on time in relative sunshine (well at least for a while) - Boy did the rain come down just around half way! Thankfully we managed to avoid being called of the course due to lightning but I reckon it was close a few times!
The course was in great condition, a little parched in places understandably and some damage on a number of the greens, following the weather we have been having, was to be expected. I felt it played pretty long especially into the wind.
Between the showers the temperature built throughout the afternoon so I think we had all dried off by the end and fended off the great par 5 finishing hole over the water and in front of the clubhouse.
We had 13 members and 7 guests join us - a great number for the day. Dinner was a one course Chicken Pie with Mash and the club made us feel safe and comfortable with well spaced eating arrangements. Robin entertained us with details of the society going back to the time when David joined and was a member and good memories came back. Bob very kindly said a few words on behalf of the family. A great day had by all I reckon.
Results for the afternoon round - The David Randall Spring Trophy
Nearest the pin on the 14th - Michael Randall
Wooden Spoon - Ray Wakeman ( +1 adjustment to handicap for next time Ray - 19)
In Third Place - Nick Cobb (34)
In Second Place - Mark Hyson (35)
In First Place - Carl Ross (38) - great score Carl well done - (-2 adjustment to handicap for next time Carl - 17)
Robin handed out bottles of wine and the trophies for the winners at Wellow last month and for the winners at Dummer along with the keepsake trophies for Tony from Wellow and Carl here.
No trophies were awarded - these will be held and kept for when we can all properly get together and handed out then.
Robin said a quick few words, collected fines for all of us who didnt score a par on the short 16th and thanked the bar staff for looking after us so well and green keepers for a great day.
Housekeeping - thought it may be worthwhile updating you on the handicap adjustment system.

Cheers guys - keep well and see you soon.
Our next AGS is on the 9th September (Wednesday) at Test Valley Golf Club.
Wellow Golf Club - Monday 13th July 2020
The Claret Jug and 27 hole challenge
After a welcoming cup of coffee and bacon roll from a very helpful, very polite and very well organised pro shop and bar an intrepid group of six players set off on the Blackwater Course to start the first AGS day since March at Salisbury for the 27 hole day at Wellow Golf Club.
The Blackwater Course is the newest addition to Wellow and is slowly maturing and provides a good warm up for the main two courses Ryedown and Embly. The course was in great condition, a little parched in places understandably and with nice greens which although a little slow were true.
It was a lovely morning and you could feel the temperature was going to build for the afternoon.
Results for the morning round.
Nearest the Pin on 2nd - No One!
In Third Place on Countback - Tony Ford (16 points)
In Second Place on Countback - Nich Hopson-Hill (16 points)
In First Place - Sean Canham (18 points)
After a very nice platter of sandwiches and hot chips at lunchtime the group expanded to 12 with the afternoon players joining us to play the Ryedown and then the Embley.
The afternoon was now warm and the wind did pick up a little bit with the sky darkening in places but the course continued to play very well. These are two nice nines with plenty to keep you occupied and interested.
The rough was, even though mowed in places, a real pain - I spent a few frustrating moments looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack!
Results for the afternoon round - The Claret Jug
Two chip-ins by Nic Artiss and Nick Hopson-Hill.
Nearest the pin Ryedown hole 9 - Tony Ford
Nearest the pin Embley hole 8 - Jerry Lee
Wooden Spoon - Bruce Eyre
In Third Place on Countback - Guy Archer (10 handicap) - (36) - (19 on the back)
In Second Place on Countback - Nic Artiss (16 handicap) - (36) - (21 on the back)
In First Place - Tony Ford (18 handicap) - 37 points
No trophies or prizes were awarded unfortunately but understandably - these will be held and kept for when we can all properly get together and handed out then.
Robin said a quick few words, collected fines for all of us who missed the green at the 9th and thanked the bar staff for looking after us so well and green keepers for a great day. Huge thanks must go to Robin for buying us ALL a drink at the end of the round.
Dear All,
Thank goodness we are back outside to play golf!
Playing for the Alan Potter Memorial Trophy
Salisbury & South Wilts welcomed us with a very nice Bacon Roll and coffee for the first AGS event of the year with a mid-morning start.
On a pretty blowy but initially dry day 14 members and 2 guests took on a course that always seems to play very well even in wet weather and, with the exception of the temporary green on the short par 4, 3rd, I think the course was in incredible condition and with the conditions a very good challenge – certainly the scores would suggest for many!
I’m pretty certain it will be a long time before we forget the incredible deluge of hail that we had halfway through the round where everyone had to stop and try to take cover. Amazing…
I think I’m right in saying the everyone enjoyed the hearty Steak Pie, copious spuds and lovely fruit crumble with custard (my favourite) in the early dinner served very well by the excellent staff?
Robin, our new Captain, then gave a little speech explaining the history of the Trophy, thanking the club for a great
day, reminding us to put together teams for the 2020 Charity Day on 10th June 2020 at Test Valley Golf Club, details of the 2nd Charity he/we are supporting this year and didn’t
tell a joke thank goodness!
Then over to
me for the results. I have put the usual detail but was asked if I could also put all scores down so we could see how we all fared – either to make us feel better or worse – so I have. If you don’t
want your detail on the website then please advise and I will remove ?
Individual competition prizes:
We welcomed two guests, Shaun Rogers and Keith Williamson and the guest prize went to Keith on 23 points.
The aforementioned wind made it difficult to hit the par threes but we did get two winners.
Nearest the pin on 8- Mark Hyson
Nearest the pin on 18 – Captains Choice hole (£1.00 to 2nd charity for missing the green and this made a few quid!) – Barrie Ward
Wooden spoon to Carl Ross on Countback against Ray Wakeman and lost on the last two holes (3 – points v 4) – 21 points each
We had one hot-chipper Jerry Lee from around 300yards apparently.
It was a tough day, only three players broke 30 points and most were in the mid 20’s. We had one retirement but Tony is just trying to protect his handicap for the rest of the year.
In third place on 31 points – Jerry Lee (off 20)
In second place on 32 points – Mark Hyson (off 22)
In first place on 33 points – Nic Artiss (off 16)
Nic made an emotional speech to thank the society but to remember Alan Potter – well done Nic and thank you.

I think that everyone who was there would say a good day was had by all?
Our next event is in April at Hartley Wintney on April 7th where we get back to our afternoon game format – not long now.
Dear All,
This years Annual General Meeting and end of year Texas Scramble was once again held at Tidworth Golf Club. An early start
at 8.30am for a lovely, large, cooked breakfast was enjoyed by 13 members followed by the AGM which Tony Ford managed for us again this year.
Mick Mumford thanked the society for it's sterling efforts this year and for the great charity day and he thanked the committee for the work that is done behind the scenes to make sure we all have as great a years golf as is possible. Thankfully time did not allow for a Mick joke (Hahaha). Officers were voted in and with the exception of the Captain all remains as this year. Our new Captain is Robin Coupland - well done Robin, look forward to details of your chosen Charity for this year's Charity Golf Day for the confirmed date of 10th June 2020 at Test Valley Golf Club.
I discussed the society's accounts and we are still solvent so that helps!
I also announced this years player of the year - Embarrassingly it was me again with Nick Cobb a very close 2nd and Tony Ford and Carl Ross tied third. Come on guys... this year you can do it - my wife wants the trophy gone!
The Hot Chipper competition was very close with three members on 2 so it was decided to continue the competition into the Texas Scramble else a putt off would be held at the end of the day.
There was discussion about the courses for 2020 and more of this in due course once Robin and Tony have made enquiries - I am sure, that once again, we will have a great set of varied challenges ahead of us - can't wait.
It was agreed that the Membership fee will reamin at £40 for this year (please make payment, preferably by bank TT as soon as you can) and that the course fee per day is likely to be £50 for this year as the society has subsidised games heavily this year.
The AGM closed and the teams drawn for the scramble - 3 of 3 players and 1 of 4.
The day was chilly (some residual frost on the ground made for some interesting approach shots) but bright and the course played very well.
Competition prizes:
1st Team - Nic Artiss/Nick Cobb/Graham Davey - 65.7
2nd Team - Tony Ford/Jerry Lee/Robin Coupland - 69.8
3rd Team - Peter Quilliam/Martin Hollis/Ray Wakeman/Mick Mumford - 71.0
4th Last/wooden spoon winners - Sean Canham/John Davis/Nick Hopson-Hill
THANKFULLY Martin Hollis chipped in on the 18th so well done Martin for winning the Hot Chipper 2019 Trophy.
I think that
everyone who was there would say a good day was had by all.
Housekeeping
PLEASE CAN I ASK THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO MAKE PAYMENT FOR THE DAY TO SEND A BACS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.
Our next meeting will be in March and most likely Salisbury and South Wilts - keep an eye on the website for details as this and other course information becomes available and please start to think about teams for the Charity Day - it would be great to get 18 plus teams this year.
Have a great Christmas and New year and I look forward to seeing you all next year.
Dear All,
On a quiet blowy but predominantly dry afternoon 10 members took on a course that hasn't been played as a society day for some time -
Upavon Golf Course.
After the traditional bacon roll and cup of coffee in the newly updated club house with a great viewing deck of the fabulous course and suroundings two groups of three and one of four set of to play. As usual the wind around this course sat on top of the hills was strong and it added another challenge to what is a relatively short but testing track. Well done to everyone for managing the rather steep hills after the 8th, up the 17th and the last signature hole, the 18th. Feedback in the bar at the end was that it was a great course in geat condition although we did have a little bit of a stress over timings for dinner!.
I think we all enjyed a very hearty Chicken Pie and plenty of lovely veg followed bycrumble and Ice Cream. I have played Upavon quite often and personally loved the area and the course and would be delighted to play it again but because of the catering arrangements there perhaps we would need to look at an early start
Captain Mick gave us a barrage of one liner jokes - Plenty of laughter and even though a smaller group there was a nice
collection for the staff. Thanks all.
OK.
Individual competition prizes:
The aforementioned wind mullered our abilities to hit the par threes. Of five holes only one was hit by one player and so;
Nearest the pin on 12 - Nick Cobb
Wooden spoon to Bruce Eyre – but I understand from his team mates that he kept cheerful and hit some lovely shots during the day.
It was a tough day, only three players broke 30 points and most were in the mid 20’s.
In third place on 32 points – Nick Cobb (off
In second place on 34 points – Carl Ross (off 18)
In first place on 36 points – Sean Canham (Me) (off 15) - think i have to take a cut for the next one!
I
think that everyone who was there would say a good day was had by all.
Housekeeping
PLEASE CAN I ASK THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO MAKE PAYMENT FOR THE DAY TO SEND A BACS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.
PLEASE CAN I ASK THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO MAKE PAYMENT FOR THE CHARITY DAY TO SEND A BACS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TOO. THANK YOU.
Our next meeting is at North Wilts Golf Club on 18th September - this was even more blowy than Upavon last year – first tee time around 1.00pm

I look forward to seeing you all then.
2019 CHARITY GOLF DAY - Sponsord by Langdowns DFK
16th July - Test Valley Golf Club
Naomi House and Jacksplace Charity Day
Dear All
The annual Charity Golf Day was held in hot and sunny conditions on Tuesday 16th July a month later than
normal. Once again Test Valley Golf Club hosted and provided the usual shotgun start, excellent catering and hospitality, and a beautifully prepared course. Members and guests dug deep for a great
range of auction and raffle prizes, the heads and tails competition and settlement of fines for wayward golf!
Special thanks to Bridget and Peter Quilliam for generously putting their apartment forward in the
auction.
Thanks too to the various Golf Clubs we are playing or have played this year for putting up 4 Ball vouchers for the auction and everyone who put in items for the hugely successful raffle.
Early indications are that the Society has raised around £2600 for Naomi House and Jacksplace. Barclays
Bank supported the raffle £ for £ raised, whilst Phil Cook took photos throughout the day.
Our Club Secretary Tony Ford (in the absence of the society Captain, Mick Mumford) thanked our sponsors,
donors and all who attended for a very successful and enjoyable day.

20th September 2018 – The Michaelmas Trophy
North Wilts Golf Club,
Devises
Dear All,
Wowza, that was an interesting day’s golf
hey?
On an incredibly blowy afternoon 12 intrepid members and 3 guests braved the chance of rain and the elements to play the lovely Golf Course that is North Wilts.
After a, what I thought was lovely, bacon roll in a yummy bun five groups of three set off across one of the craziest roads I’ve ever seen at a golf course to play. To say the wind was strong is a massive understatement but boy did it add to the challenge of what was a really good day. The par three at the top of the course was incredible – not just for the view but for the fact that even a 40 yard hit to the left of the green still ended up 20 yards to the right!! I don’t think I have ever played in such a gale, but it was fun…. Other members may think differently but I am sure they enjoyed it ? The Rain held off, so we all managed to get back to the club house windswept but dry. Dark clouds threatened but we all scrapped in without getting wet. What a great day.
The club looked after us excellently. Very friendly, very helpful and with the aforementioned roll and then a lovely dinner of Chicken Pie, Roast Spuds and plenty of lovely veg followed by a perfect bread and butter pudding and custard spoiled us rotten – for me I loved it and think this is a defo for next year – wind or not. I personally loved the area and the course and would be delighted to play it again
Peter gave Grace and Captain Mick gave us a little joke and short speech and then we got thoroughly stuffed. Plenty of laughter over dinner even though a smaller group thank usual
and a nice collection for both the staff and the 2nd charity. Thanks all.
OK.
Individual competition prizes:
Our guest prize went to Nick Cobb on 24 points – Nick has also asked to join us – Welcome Nick, great to have you onboard.
Nearest the pin on 3 – David
Benwell
Nearest the pin on 6 – Peter Quilliam
Nearest the pin on 13 – no one but wow what a hole to play in that wind – 170 yards downhill wind whipping left to right – awesome.
Nearest the pin on 15 – David Benwell.
Well done David – just goes to show steady and down the middle brings its own rewards – I’m sure the two bottles of wine have already been enjoyed?!
Wooden spoon to Nic Artiss – think he’s making too much effort to get the handicap increased!!
It was a tough day, only two players broke 30 points and most were in the mid 20’s.
In third place on 27 points the only lady battling the course – Briget Quilliam (off 36)
In second place and losing by one point only on 32 points (sorry Nick) – Nick Hopson-Hill (off 19)
In first place on 33 points – Sean Canham (Me) (off 15)
There are no handicap adjustments due from this event – sorry Nic ?
I think that everyone who was there would say a good day
was had by all.

17th July – Cumberwell Park Golf Club – Away day
The Claret
Jug
Dear All,
In very hot and humid conditions we made our away day to
the very attractive (even in the dry heat) of Cumberwell Park near Bradford-On-Avon for out 27 hole challenge.
At Tony’s suggestion we decided to play the Par 3 course and what a joy that was. I don’t think I have been to any Par 3 where a Gold Club takes as much care in the design and upkeep. It must be very difficult to make a golf course playable after the hot weather we had but this course didn’t disappoint.
Nine members (three three’s) set off to play this challenging Par 3 with some great views of the area and a fantastic 8th hole surrounded by water as the signature hole. Well done to those who stayed dry but even more well done to those who hit the green…. Oh that was me and Tony ?
We played a stableford on this course and placings as follows;
1st Bruce Eyre
2nd Mick Muford
2rd Sean Canham (countback)
Nearest the pin on the 8th – Tony Ford.
In the afternoon we were joined by six more members to play the Yellow & Red Courses on the main course. Again very dry but actually in great condition considering and the greens played well and true. Distance control was interesting for sure but it must have actually played quite well as we saw more high scores here than have been forth coming to date this year. I think everyone enjoyed it for sure.
The club looked after us very well, plenty of sandwiches and chips at the lunchtime break and a nice meal in the evening to finish it all off.
I personally loved the area and the course and would be delighted to play it again (perhaps when a little more green?).
Dark clouds threatened but we all scrapped in without getting wet. What a great day.
Peter gave Grace and Captain Mick gave us a little joke and short speech and then we stuffed
ourselves.
Individual competition prizes:
Nearest the pin on 16th Yellow Course – Mr
Peter Quilliam
Nearest the pin on 3rd Red Course – Me
1st Place – an amazing 44 Points – Nic Artiss
2nd Place – but not quite so amazing 40 points – Me
3rd Place – Great scoring and second prize of the day – Bruce Eyre
Wooden spoon awarded in the morning to Robin Coupland (great special prize offered up by Mick)
Wooden spoon in the afternoon to Cliff Tucker
I think that everyone who was there would say a good day
was had by all.

19th April 2018 – Oak Park Golf Club – 2nd meeting of 2018
Playing for the David Randall Spring Trophy
Welcome to the second golfing report of the exciting 2018 Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a very warm and extremely sunny day, 21 of us (16 members and five great guests) met for a bacon roll and the second game of the year competing for the David Randall Spring Trophy in memory of David who was a long standing, missed and fondly remembered member of the society.
It was fantastic once again to be joined by Bob, William and Michael Randall and a shame that Edward was unable to come along this year. It was great too to see Nick Cobb back and we were joined by Darren Moore. Thank you gentleman for coming along.
PLEASE can I ask society members to forward this report to their guests? Thank you.
With the afternoon sun already beginning to take some toll on the intrepid groups we ventured out. The course was tough – I am not sure that many had the worlds best day out there. The rough was penal and even the fairways proved that even if you stayed on them you weren’t guaranteed the best lie to take you next shot. It felt to me that this course has seriously suffered from the recent bad weather and was in need of some serious TLC to bring it up to scratch. Maybe I am being harsh but hey, I am always honest.
Unfortunately, a couple of members were unable to finish the course. Martin became poorly and Captain Mick had to shoot off for an important meeting but he did join us a say a few words to welcome our guests before the game started. Credit to all who did finish, I was worried I might have to do some CPR judging by the exhaustion that struck a few members from the heat. Thankfully no mouth to mouth was needed.
Although the course wasn’t to everyone’s liking I think I can safely say that we all still enjoyed our time together judging by conversations over a drink and a very nice dinner and pudding served by the very friendly and welcoming staff. Our thanks must go to them for looking after us so well.
Shame Mick wasn’t there to give us another one of his wonderful, brilliant, witty jokes at the end ?
The course played very hard. Scores were, even for us, low but it was interesting that we all struggled really.
So to the awards..
With five guests I felt we should offer some prizes too so;
In 2nd place; (Tied with Michael Randall but winning on countback) Mr Nick Cobb – 28 points
In 1st place; Mr William Randall – 31 points – well done William and thank you again for kindly bringing along a number of Srixon gifts for the winners
AGS Members prizes;
For the wooden spoon; Mr David Benwell – the score doesn’t matter ?
Nearest the Pin 3rd (W); Nick Hopson-Hill
Nearest the Pin 6th (W); Barrie Ward
Nearest the Pin 7th (V); Giles Bevan-Thomas
Longest Drive on the 18th ; Giles Bevan-Thomas
3rd place; On countback between Tony Ford, and Sean Canham was Malcolm Mackenzie with 25 points
2nd place; Jamie Richmond – 26 points
1st place; Barrie Ward – 30 points
Well done Barrie – no handicap adjustments for next time.
Our next meeting is the 17th May at Rushmore Park. www.rushmoregolfclub.co.uk
15th March 2018 – Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club – 1st meeting of 2018
Playing for the Alan Potter Cup
Welcome to the first golfing report of the exciting 2018 Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a chilly day with the threat of rain, or worse snow, 16 of us (12 members and four great guests) met for and breakfast for our inaugural start to 2018 at the South Wilts Golf Club competing for the Alan Potter Cup in memory of Alan who was a founding and long standing member of the society.
Thank you to Shevron Fisher, Nick Cobb, Morgan Fletcher and Cliff Baker for joining as our guests and I hope that you enjoyed the day as much as I did. We all very much look forward to seeing you again soon.
PLEASE can I ask society members to forward this report to their guests? Thank you.
Split into four teams of three and one of four we ventured out. The course played remarkedly well. One of the main reasons for choosing S & SW for the first game of the year and even with all the poor weather it was remarkedly firm with very few damps areas.
It is a lovely course for sure and the greens and fairways were a credit to the ground staff. They are doing some remedial work in places and by the looks of things planting some new trees so the difficulty level looks like it may change quite soon!
The day was much enjoyed by all, judging by conversations over a drink and a fantastic ham egg and chips followed by scrumptious chocolate brownie and ice cream for our late lunch. Our thanks must go to the very friendly and efficient staff for looking after us so well and offering us a golf course in great condition.
Our new Captain Mick Mumford said a few words at the end, with a truly awful joke and then we gave out the prizes.
With four guests I felt we should offer some prizes too so;
For the guest wooden spoon ( a box of balls kindly donated by Martin Hollis); Mr Nick Chubb
In 2nd place; Mr Shevron Fisher – 34 points
In 1st place; Mr Morgan Fletcher – 37 points (off 4) AWESOME
AGS Members prizes;
For the wooden spoon; Mr Barrie Ward
Nearest the Pin 8th; Jerry Lee
Nearest the Pin 18th; Nick Hopson-Hill
3rd place; Nick Hopson-Hill – 32 points
2nd place; Mick Mumford – 34 points (19 on back 9)
1st place; Sean Canham – 34 points but (21 on back 9
Our next meeting is the 19th April at Oak Park. http://www.oakparkgolf.co.uk/
This is a new event for the society so please do free up the busy diary and make a note to join us. With the light on our side this will be a PM start. I look forward to seeing you all there.

6th December 2017 – High Post Golf Club – AGM Texas Scramble meeting
Welcome to the last report of the 2017 Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a chilly, blowy and threatening day 14 of us met for an early breakfast and AGM at the High Post followed by 11 intrepid players ventured onto the course to battle the end of year Texas scramble.
Split into three teams (two of four, one of three) I reckon we gave it a good go. The course played remarkedly well if tough in the wind with maybe one or two clubs extra being needed at times.
It is a lovely course and played very well considering the recent weather.
The day was much enjoyed by all, judging by conversations over a drink at the end. Our thanks must go to the very friendly and efficient staff for looking after us so well and offering us a golf course in great condition.
Our new Captain Mick Mumford said a few, very few, words at the end and then we gave out the prizes.

July 18th 2017 - East Horton Golf Club
Welcome to the fifth report of the 2017 Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a beautiful day with the sun smashing down a total of 13 players met at East Horton Golf Club near Fair Oak.
The mornings event was an 11 hole Stableford competition with 6 competitors playing (all members) on the Parkland Course and for fun I split the players into teams of three for a little challenge.
The afternoons event, the traditional 18 hole Stableford for The Claret Jug was played on the more tricky (as scores would suggest!) Greenwood Course. We were joined by Jerry Lee as our guest and two new members, John Francis and Jamie Richmond. Welcome all.
Nick introduced a side competition here of the best total score on the front 9 par 3’s and back nine par 3’s.
The course played remarkedly well if tough with some great holes, very different features and a really awesome cliff to climb!, I think by the afternoons event a good number of the intrepid 6 players from the morning were somewhat jaded, as again scores may suggest – never mind. Interestingly only one player scored excess of 30 points and that was Jerry Lee, our guest on 31 points. Jerry won our guest prize.
The day was much enjoyed by all, judging by conversations in the bar afterwards. The Barn bar that greeted us for Bacon rolls, a fantastic choice of three lunches and then a stupendous stew was superb and the ambiance of the whole day was fantastic. Many thanks to the staff and chefs at the Club. How on earth did they put all that on for such a reasonable price??
Our timing was perfect as the heavens opened just as we wound up the meeting and a torrential downpour soaked many as we dashed for our cars! Got to love the English Summer!!!
This is a great club and course I think and hope that it is kept for next year’s dates and a few more can enjoy it to the full.
Ok, now the results;
The Morning 11 hole challenge:
Teams : Nick H-H/Sean/Robin ; winners on 57 points
Nic/Martin/Barrie ; 2nd runners up on 41 points
1st place on a stunning 25 points for 11 holes ; Mr Robin Coupland, Sean(24), Nick (23)
The afternoon 18 hole stableford competition for the Claret Jug.
Nearest the Pin on 6th – Nick Hopson-Hill
Best Score on the front 9 par 3’s – on countback Mr Nick Hopson-Hill with 5 points.
Best Score on the back 9 par 3’s – out on his own J Sean Canham on 7 points
The top three awards
With the heat and course taking its toll, no one scored over 30 points here and it was pretty tight in the mix…but……
In third place playing off 19: Nick Hopson-Hill with 27 points
In second place playing off 17 (cut two from May): Carl Ross with 27 points (On countback)
And in first place, winning The Claret Jug off 15: Hugh Reid with 29 points
Well done to all our worthy winners.
Our next event is North Wilts on August the 16th. https://www.northwiltsgolf.com/
April 26th 2017 - Dummer Golf Club
Dear All,
Welcome to the second report of the 2017 Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a cold and very blowy 26th April, with a hint of snow and hail, 19 players – 14 members and 5 guests met for a 12.00 pm start and 12.56 pm tee off at the Dummer Golf Club playing for ‘The David Randall Spring Trophy’. It was fantastic to be joined by David’s family, Will, Bob, Michael and Ed Randall for the day. It was great to have Daz Hitchman come along as our guest too.
The course played remarkedly well and was very nicely presented with the greens, although very dry and recently worked upon playing very true in deed.
The afore mentioned blowy wind didn’t help the scores (for many at least) with some of the holes playing at least a shot longer than Par rather like last month at Salisbury.
The day was much enjoyed by all, judging by conversations in the bar afterwards, and the massive beef stew and dumplings followed by a huge slice of chocolate brownie and Ice Cream filled everyone to the brim!!
Captain Nick thanked the club and the staff for their great work and spoke about this year’s Charities we are looking to support – Andover Mind for our main Charity Event and the Canine Home Help as last year.
Nick also thank the Randall lads for joining us again and hoped that they will join us again next year if not before.
Ok, now the results; It is worth noting that only four members managed to break 30 points (one less than at Salisbury) – it was that tough out there!
Guest Prize
With Five guests we had a guest prize and the winner was William Randall with a 33 (H/Cap 16) on countback on the back 9 from Bob Randall.
Tony had set many challenges for us out on the course so there was plenty to play for. Will had kindly donated a number of Srixon items to the prize table and this is much appreciated – thank you Will.
Nearest the Pins
In the windy weather I think many struggled to even hit greens so for the following players a massive well done.
Nearest the Pin on 5th – Bob Randall
Nearest the Pin on 14th – Barrie Ward
Nearest the Pin on 17th – Michael Randall
Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 2nd – Sean Canham
Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 16th – Edward Randall
Straightest Drive
David Benwell
The top three awards
In third place playing off 28 : David Benwell with 31 points
In second place playing off 16 : Mick Mumford with 35 points
And in first place, winning The David Randall Spring Trophy a fantastic score for : Carl Ross with 36 points.
Well done to all our worthy winners. There will be no Handicap adjustments this month.
Our next event is at Tidworth on the 16th May. This is a new event, an evening round. Meet will be around 3.00pm and tee offs from around 4.00pm. The idea is to make it easier for those working to take a little less time off in the day. We will have sandwiches and chips for tea afterwards. I look forward to seeing you all there.
March 23rd 2017 - Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club
Welcome to the first report of the new year of the Andover Golfing Society calendar.
On a damp and very blowy 23rd March 17 players – 15 members and two guests (Nathan Holmes and Chris Hutchinson) met for a 9.00am start and 10.00am tee off at the Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club playing for ‘The Alan Potter Memorial Cup’.
The course played remarkedly well and was very nicely presented with the greens playing very true in deed.
The afore mentioned blowy wind didn’t help the scores (for many) with some of the holes playing at least a shot longer than Par. Club selection made low scores difficult (for most) and made for interesting conversations while perched high up on the glorious hills overlooking Salisbury. Many rosy cheeks at lunch alluded to the wind burn!
The day was much enjoyed and the ham, egg and chips for lunch was destroyed in seconds by all.
Captain Nick thanked the club and the staff for their great work and spoke about this year’s Charities we are looking to support – Andover Mind for our main Charity Event and the Canine Home Help as last year.
Nick also payed tribute to Phil Maltby a past Captain who has recently passed away and a minutes’ silence was respectfully held in his honour.
I spoke for a few minutes on some ideas for three new competitions and the detail will follow in another email in due course.
Ok, now the results; It is worth noting that just five members managed to break 30 points – it was that tough out there!
Guest Prize
With two guests we had a guest prize and the winner was Chris Hutchinson with a 31 (H/Cap 12)
Nearest the Pins
In the windy weather I think many struggled to even hit greens so for the following two players a massive well done for sure!
Nearest the Pin on 8 – Martin Hollis
Nearest the Pin on 18 – Bob Cradduck
The top three awards
In third place playing off 19 : Carl Ross with 31 points
In second place playing off 15 : Bob Cradduck with 34 points
And in first place, winning The Alan Potter Memorial Cup’ a fantastic score for : Mick Mumford with 35 points.
Well done to all our worthy winners. There will be no Handicap adjustments this month.
Our next event is at Dummer on the 26th April with our usual afternoon timings. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Please keep an eye out for the email on the new competitions
2016 Results
7th December 2016 - AGM at the High Post Golf Club
Dear all
Just a note regarding the last Society function of 2016 - the Annual General meeting at High Post GC, Wed 07 December. The Club provided an excellent full-English breakfast, generously served up on a help-yourself basis. Outgoing Secretary Tony Ford led the AGM that followed, which included an address from our President-for-the-next-millennium and reports from the outgoing Captain, and other outgoing officers. I will not go into the detail of what followed other than to say the after nominations for Committee were taken, amazingly most of the outgoing officers suddenly became incoming for 2017. I understand that the incoming Captain will shortly be presenting a quite different and interesting programme for 2017.
After the AGM the traditional Texas Scramble (organised by the outgoing Competitions Secretary) was played out in excellent conditions for the time of year and, as usual, High Post course was in great shape. The winning team was:
Sean Canham, Mick Mumford, Mark Hyson and Robin Coupland
Finally, may I say how much I have enjoyed being Press Secretary during the past season, and I look forward to enjoying next year in your company on the golf course. A very Happy Christmas to you and yours from Julia and me.
Robin, outgoing and incoming Press Officer
15th September 2016 - North Wilts Golf Club
Dear all (from your Press Secretary)
I apologise for the delay in sending my report of the most recent Andover Golfing Society meeting. A slightly modified report will be sent to the Andover Advertiser where we have had good success this year in getting publication, and thus some useful exposure.
On 15 September the Society visited North Wilts Golf Club to contest The Michaelmas Trophy, won in 2015 by Hugh Reid at Mendip Golf Club. 11 members welcomed guest Mark Shand, and the competition was played out in warm sunshine on a beautifully presented course. This is I believe, the Society's first visit to N Wilts and the feedback has been very positive. Very good catering catering, not too far for all to travel; certainly worth consideration for another visit.
As a golfing challenge it was no pushover with points hard to come by for most! Nevertheless, one golfer stood out with a to-handicap round together with a couple of nearest-the-pins. The results, for The Michaelmas Trophy:
'The Spoon' - David Benwell
Nearest the pin - 3: Nic Artiss
6: Graham Davey
13: Graham Davey
15: Giles Bevan-Thomas
3rd - Hugh Reid 32pts
2nd - Brian Mellor 32pts (on countback)
Winner - Graham Davey 36pts (h/cap -1)
Congratulations to Graham for his accuracy and solid golf!
NEXT MEETING is at Tidworth on Tuesday 11 October for The Autumn Cup, currently held by Mick Mumford. This is the last trophy meeting of the season (next up in Nov will be the Pairs Challenge) so lets have a really good turn-out!
Best regards
Robin
9th August - Sherfield Oaks Golf Club
Guys,
We visited Sherfield Oaks to challenge the Captain's Trophy for the second year, and the quality of the course did not disappoint. 11 members and 6 guests attended. Some question marks over the
quality of welcome and catering but the golf was the important issue and for this there was unanimous praise. Wonder what the other 18 is like?
Martin Hollis and guests Keith Williamson got near enough to the pins to take their reward, and Cliff Tucker will be passing the 'Spoon' on at the next meeting. All the guests will have to come
back to see who wins the Guest Prize!
So, the results of the Captain's Trophy:
3rd: Bob Cradduck 34 pts
2nd: Martin Hollis 35 pts
Winner: Robin Coupland 39 pts (h'cap adj. -2)
Housekeeping:
Next meeting is the 'away day' (cos' of distance) at North Wilts on Thurs 15 Sept. Don't think the Society has been there before. Guests most welcome as usual.
Best regards
Robin
6th July - Wellow Golf Club
Greetings all
AGS made full use of Wellow's 3 x 9s for its July meeting - a morning 9 hole Challenge, followed by the afternoon Stableford competition for the Claret Jug. This course improves year-on-year with
its beautifully manicured greens and lush fairways. With its excellent catering facilities and welcoming staff, it is great value for money.
Guest RUSSELL WEBBER stayed out of the long grass to bag the Challenge prize with 19 pts, continuing his form in the afternoon to take the Best Guest Prize with 33 pts.
Bob Cradduck and Carl Ross claimed the nearest-the-pin prizes.
Results, for the Claret Jug:
Wooden Spoon - Barrie Ward few pts.
3rd - Nic Artiss 33 pts.
2nd - Nick Hopson-Hill 34 pts.

Congratulations to Carl, scooping the Jug on his first outing as a member of AGS!

Next meeting is at Sherfield Oaks on Tues 09 August for the Captain's Trophy, currently held by Nic Artiss. We visited this club for the first time last year and the general opinion was that
it is an excellent Society challenge. Guests welcome as usual; same dress code applies
9th June - Test Valley Golf Club
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity Day
Dear All
The annual Charity Golf Day was held in hot and sunny conditions on Thursday 09 June 2016. Once again Test Valley Golf Club hosted and provided the usual shotgun start, excellent catering and
hospitality, and a beautifully prepared course. Members and guests dug deep for a great range of auction and raffle prizes, and settlement of fines for wayward golf!
Special thanks to Bridget and Peter Quilliam for generously putting their apartment forward for 2 separate weeks in the auction.
Early indications are that the Society has raised around £3700 for Hants and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, represented on the day by Ryland Lee who gave a talk and pictorial guide to the their
activities. Barclays Bank supported the raffle £ for £ raised, and their representative Steve Grenfell gave a short presentation, whilst Henrick Kock took photos throughout the day.

asap.
12th May - Ogbourne Downs Golf Club
Hello everyone
A strong, cool wind was a major factor in Andover Golfing Society's third meeting at Ogbourne Downs Golf Course, where 21 players (inc guests) attended the Midsummer Salver competition.
Points were hard to come by and no one bettered their handicap. Sean Canham carded 30 points for third place with Mark Hyson second with 32, just pipped by a steady 33 points from Tony Ford who took
the Salver. Best guest was Tim Mynott with 35 points, who also won a nearest the pin prize. Other winners were Graham Merry, David Benwell and Nick Hopson-Hill. Barrie Ward was unlucky recipient of
the wooden spoon for few points. Commiserations also Sean Canham who registered nearest the pin on 3 holes, only to be bested later.
Next meeting is the Society's important Charity Day at Test Valley on Thurs 09 June, in support of Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance. Nick H-H has been badgering us for support to make
this day a success. Once again we have Test Valley's management right behind us with a shotgun start and their excellent facilities, all for last year's price! We need some more teams so PLEASE press
any golfers you know to attend this event. Also, donations are needed for the raffle so if you cannot attend, please give generously.
Look forward to seeing you at Test Valley!
13th April - Weybrook Park Golf Club
Greetings all,
Now, AGS met at Weybrook Park on 13 April to challenge the David Randall Spring Trophy, won in 2015 at Hamptworth by Tony Ford. The Society welcomed guests Malcolm Waldron and once again,
Team Randall comprising William, Robert and Michael. Special thanks to William for generously providing some prizes.
Despite the lovely calm and sunny spring weather, the course proved a tough golfing challenge with most scores registering in the 20's. One member however, blew away the competition with a
stunning second half display of 2 birdies, 5 pars and 2 bogies - gross par golf! The birdies were on the consecutive par 5s and included a chip-in - the first of the season for Nick Hopson-Hill's
special 2016 challenge. Big hitting Sean Canham is clearly the man in form.
Results for the David Randall Spring Trophy:
Winner - Sean Canham 41 pts (wow) h'cap 16 - 2 = 14
2nd - Tony Ford 31 pts

17th March - Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club
On Thursday 17 March AGS visited Salisbury & South Wilts to challenge The Alan Potter Memorial Cup, won in 2015 by Bob Cradduck with 34 pts.
12 members attended, and the morning round played on a well presented course in calm, dry conditions was followed by an excellent ham, egg and chips lunch. The general lack of accuracy enabled
Captain Nick Hopson-Hill to impose many fines for the Charity pot, but the outing was much enjoyed by all.
So, the results:
Nearest the pin:
8th - Graham Davey (not very near, but a yard closer than yours truly!)
18th - not one on the green!!
Moving rapidly on .........
3rd - Robin Coupland 33 pts
2nd - Graham Davey 34 pts
Winner, and retaining The Alan Potter Memorial Cup:
Bob Cradduck 36 pts
Congratulations to Bob for playing to his handicap!
NEXT MEETING. Wed 13 April we play for The David Randall Spring Trophy at Weybrook Park, always a popular venue. This is our usual format: lunchtime meet for bacon roll and coffee, afternoon
Stableford golf, followed by evening meal and prizes. Jackets and ties please. Lets have a good turn-out!
Best regards
Robin
